  1. 1460-1516. Early Netherlandish painter. His
  2. fantastic visions of weird and hellish
  3. creatures, as shown in The Garden of Earthly
  4. Delights about 1505-10 (Prado, Madrid), show
  5. astonishing imagination and a complex
  6. imagery. His religious subjects focused not
  7. on the holy figures but on the mass of
  8. ordinary witnesses, placing the religious
  9. event in a contemporary
  10. Netherlandish context and creating cruel
  11. caricatures of human sinfulness. Bosch is
  12. named from his birthplace, 'sHertogenbosch,
  13. in Brabant (now in Belgium). His work
  14. foreshadowed Surrealism and was probably
  15. inspired by a local religious brotherhood.
  16. However, he was an orthodox Catholic and a
  17. prosperous painter, not a heretic, as was
  18. once believed. After his death, his work was
  19. collected by Philip II of Spain.
